3 Technologies

Three technologies that I have discovered from reading my classmates blogs are LinkedIn, Education Podcast Network, and Data Government Education. LinkedIn and Education Podcast Network were shared by Kirk Wilkins.  David Aleman shared Data Government Education on his blog.  The respective URLs are www.linkedin.com, www.data.gov/education, and www.edupodcastnetwork. These websites are useful because they encourage collaboration, incorporation, and communication using multimedia.

LinkedIn is a website wherein students can collaborate with each other and share ideas about their classes, studies, and disciplines. Two examples of how I might incorporate this website into my professional practice includes posting and blogging about assignments. I would post an assignment on a current event related to medicine and nursing. I would ask students to share relevant research regarding that current event.

The second website I would incorporate into my classes is Education Podcast Network. Podcast can be created with audio and video. I would create review activities on nursing and medical content. Students could answer questions at the end of the podcast on these subjects. Also, if I am unable to finish instruction for a certain day, I could record a podcast for the students to review at their convenience after class.

The third website I will use is the Data Government Education website. This website has list of resources educators could use in the classroom. Some of these resources include games for class warm ups, digital games for learning course content, and blogs that can be used for communication between the class members. I would use games to engage students during the introduction of the class. For example, I would post questions over information the class reviewed previously. Students would score points in the game for questions answered correctly. Also, these questions would help the students to be mindful of important information that should be studied. Next, I would use a blog to discuss misconceptions noticed during the educational games. This opportunity would give students the chance to communicate with me and I with them.

In conclusion, I have been made aware of many technology websites that I could use to help instruct adult learners.  My colleagues have blogged about LinkedIn, Education Podcast Network, and Data Government Education. These websites will serve as sources in collaboration, incorporation, and communication using multimedia.

Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship
Enhancing digital citizenship can be taught to students from website resources during the introductory phase of class. Websites such as Digital Citizenship and Cyber Learning provide resources and activities that can be used in class. Those resources include information on technology, podcast, and social networking. Social networking can be used to post innovative ways to build a respectful and safe digital environment. Both Digital Citizenship and Cyber Learning websites can be incorporated into class activities to encourage digital citizenship.

Digital Citizenship ‘s URL is digitalcitizenship.net. My rationale for choosing this website includes the resources and the publications. One way I will use Digital Citizenship in the classroom is by instructing the students on digital etiquette. Next, I will keep posters up in the room and near mobile devices to remind students to be aware of their responsibilities of practicing safe internet etiquette. Here are some sample posters.

During the introductory phase of the class, I will also use exercises from Cyber Learning. The URL for Cyber Learning is http://www.cyberlearning. I will divide students into groups and encourage them to discuss innovative ways they can create a safe and respectful learning environment on the internet. I will allow students to post to a blog. Students will post ideas being mindful not to repeat the ideas of others. This will encourage students to create new and innovative tactics for building a responsible digital environment.

My FreeCE and Darton

My Free CE and Darton

My free CEU is a website that can be used by health professionals to gain credit hours for work. The URL is www.myfreece.com. Healthcare workers can read and take test to gain credit hours to keep their license up to date. These websites are helpful in getting license renewed. As an adult educator, I can assign free courses to students. The courses that I would assign are the ones that correlate with the lessons that I am teaching.

Another resource that I would support is distance learning. Most of my students attend more than one college simultaneously. For example, they are high school students that are in the MOWR program taking Nursing Assistant Courses and attending online college at a surrounding college. The URL for one of the surrounding colleges my students attend is online.darton.edu. My students are taking Calculus classes online at this college.

ON24 and Sims

ON24 and Sims

Two examples of virtual environments I would like to use for instruction are ON24 and the Sims game. My rationale for choosing these virtual environments are they give players the chance to make choices and engage in those learning as they wish. ON24’s URL is http://www.on24.com/products/virtual-environments/.  ON24 is an interactive environment that can be tailored to look like our classroom. Students log in to the environment and are directed to courses and resources. The courses can be interactive. I could present resources at the left of the screen. Students can read the information and advance to other classes. I could give information on the carotid pulse; location, facts, and pictures. Next, the students can answer questions. If they answer the questions correctly, they can advance on to the next pulse site. This virtual environment reminds me of the Sims game. The Sims game URL is https://www.thesims.com. The Sims game is a life simulation game wherein players can choose their own character and make choices about any aspects of their lives. I would create a Sims game wherein the students are nursing assistants. They would have to choose the appropriate pulse site to assess. If the students choose the correct pulse site, the patient will live. If the students choose the wrong pulse site, the patient would die.

IPods and GPS

GPS and IPods

The URL for GPS is www.gps.gov. The reason why I selected GPS is because I know little about this system. GPS is the acronym for Global positioning system. This system is used to locate places and positions on the Earth. GPS does not require the internet to be used. The United States maintains GPS through global satellites. Two ways I have thought about implementing GPS in the classroom setting include Facebook and games. Facebook can be used as a login to document students’ positions during field trips related to medicine and nursing. For instance, students that visit colleges, museums, or clinical settings can document their locations on Facebook with a brief synopsis of their day in that environment. Secondly, a GPS game can be created through Prezi, that helps the students identify pulse site locations of the body.

Ipods can also be used to identify pulse sites. IPods can be used by recording verbal information and pictures identifying pulse sites. For example, I can record information on the radial pulse and the students can download that information from the school’s google accounts. Also, pictures can be saved on IPods identifying the location of the pulse sites. IPods are storage devices for multimedia. I choose the IPods because they will help students keep a collection of resources on pulse sites. The URL for IPods are www.apple.com/ipod.

Facebook and Twitter

Twitter and Facebook

The two social networking technologies I chose to analyze are Twitter and Facebook. I choose these web tools to keep adult learners informed and engaged in adult education topics. Both social networks are free. Twitter’s URL is https://twitter.com. Twitter is a conversation style blog. The posts on Twitter are shorter than traditional blogs. Twitter is a good tool to help keep adult learners informed. An adult educator can start a blog to post classwork assignments and answer any questions posed by adult learners about a course.

Facebook’s URL is https://www.facebook.com. Facebook’s purpose is to provide a marketplace for members to share information. That information can be a picture, video, or a post. Other members can respond to the post and post information about their own views to that post. Facebook can enhance adult education by allowing members to gather in a forum and post relevant information regarding any topic.
